The article by Dan Frommer features quotes from Lextech Labs CEO Alex Bratton that explain why the company decided on the $900 price point.
Frommer writes, “Why charge so much? Because for the people who are buying the app, it’s actually a relatively small cost. Bratton says his target customers are monitoring security systems for corporations, government organizations, universities, etc., that can run more than half a million dollars. For them, a $900 app is just part of the cost of doing business. Especially when the alternative — getting a custom piece of hardware developed, instead of using off-the-shelf iPhones and iPod touches — costs thousands per gadget.”

Below are excerpts from the Network Centric Security article, “iPhone App Shrinks, Simplifies IP Video Management” by Brent Dirks. Read the full article here.

Chris Wyller, North Central sale manager for Milestone, said the mobile nature of the application is helping to bring a new type of customer to the world of IP video surveillance.
“The mobile application is something that has always been defined but never truly tested,” he said. “For the majority of people who use video surveillance on the IP side, it’s neglected on how they are going to view that video. Now we can powerfully enable video with a very intuitive device and bring our software to someone who leaves a site and give them the same features, functionality, and command and control as if they were in their own LAN.”

Milestone’s Wyller said the application is bringing in a new type of customer to the IP video management world and that his company has been pleased with the feedback from the industry and end users.
“What the iPhone/iPod Touch user group gives us is a hook into that type of user that we have not been familiar with,” he said. “The user is someone that is media savvy and has never seen video portrayed on that type of device efficiently. The application will give us the opportunity for someone to dive into IP video where before they were a little slower coming into the marketplace because they couldn’t use video on that type of device they spent $400 on.”

Last week’s ASIS show was a huge success for Lextech Labs and iRa. We had a chance to interact very closely with some of our launch partners, get to meet new partners and absorb a whole lot of industry trends first hand.
In the next couple blog posts I’ll be expanding on some of the interesting items we identified and sharing knowledge we gleaned from the leaders present.
But for us the show was a great place to identify that iRa is the only iPhone application of its kind in the world and there are a lot of industry experts very excited to work with us in bringing the power of an iPhone viewing and control interface that is extremely intuitive to the market.
