IP Surveillance Innovations Driven by Consumer Tech
Something very obvious at the ASIS show this year was that technologies normally targeted at the consumer are making their way into the security space. Improvements in compression and video resolution that consumers demanded are now available for other industries to adopt. IP video, multi-megapixel cameras and H.264 compression were evident everywhere as companies scrambled to keep up with advances and position them for the security market. Each of those technologies really started focused on the consumer and until recently had not been available on a broad scale for security applications.
Speaking as part of a panel on future technology trends for security Fredrik Nilsson from Axis Communications summed it up very simply with "Consumers are driving high tech and we can piggy back on that" -- while proudly showing his iPhone.
Of course the next wave of consumer tech that we're expecting to enter the physical security market in a big way is mobile surveillance and situational awareness, starting with video applications like our iRa iPhone app. We're looking forward to empowering physical security teams as part of these new solutions.

ASIS 2008 Security Show Roundup
Last week's ASIS show was a huge success for Lextech Labs and iRa. We had a chance to interact very closely with some of our launch partners, get to meet new partners and absorb a whole lot of industry trends first hand.
In the next couple blog posts I'll be expanding on some of the interesting items we identified and sharing knowledge we gleaned from the leaders present.
